What kind of plant is strawberry?
A strawberry is an aggregate accessory fruit from a flowering plant of the genus Fragaria (strawberries), which belongs to the Rose family (Rosaceae). These low-growing, herbaceous perennial plants are known for their characteristic three-leaflet, serrated leaves and produce white flowers that develop into the red, edible fruit. Botanically, each "seed" on the outside of the fruit is a tiny, dry fruit called an achene, which contains a true seed.
Steps to planting Albion and Seascape varieties:
Site Selection and Soil Preparation
-
Location: Choose a spot with well-draining soil, as strawberries are susceptible to root diseases.
-
Soil: Use a high-quality, well-draining commercial potting mix or amend garden soil with compost. For containers, ensure they have drainage holes.
-
Crop Rotation: Avoid planting strawberries in the same area where other fruit or solanaceous crops (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes) grew within the last five years, due to soil disease risks.
Planting Time
-
Timing: Plant strawberries in the spring, once nighttime temperatures consistently remain above 35°F (1.6°C).
Planting Process
-
Dormant Plants: If using bareroot plants, soak the roots in water for a couple of hours to reduce transplant shock.
Hole: Dig a hole large enough to spread out the roots.
-
Position: Place the plant so the crown (the thick part at the center where the roots and leaves emerge) is slightly above the soil line (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch high).
-
Cover Roots: Cover the roots completely with soil.
-
Containers: For containers, use a potting mix and ensure the crown is positioned correctly.
Aftercare
-
Watering: Water regularly, especially in containers, as the soil dries out more quickly.
-
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced plant food to promote better blooms and fruit.
-
Monitoring: Keep an eye on plants and address any signs of leaf rot or fruit rot, as some varieties can be susceptible to these issues.
First Year of Care
-
Remove Runners: The most important first-year step is to remove all runners (stems that produce new plants) to direct the plant's energy into strengthening its root system and developing healthy foliage.
-
Watering: Water the soil with a seaweed tea solution two weeks before planting to boost growth, suggests Sustainable Gardening Australia.
-
Weeding: Keep the area around your strawberry plants free of weeds, as they compete for water, nutrients, and light.
Long Term Health:
Watering & Soil
-
Consistent Moisture: Water regularly, especially during hot, dry periods, to keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy or waterlogged.
-
Proper Technique: Water deeply and directly at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the leaves and fruit, which can lead to fungal diseases.
-
Soil Drainage: Ensure your soil has good drainage, as strawberry plants hate sitting in saturated conditions.
Plant Health & Maintenance
-
Planting Depth: Plant strawberries high, ensuring the crown (where the leaves emerge) is at soil level or slightly exposed.
-
Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch, like straw or grass clippings, to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the fruit from soil contact.
-
Weeding: Keep the planting area free of weeds to prevent competition for water and nutrients.
-
Feeding: Feed your strawberry plants annually to ensure they have adequate nutrients for growth and fruiting.
Fruiting & Productivity
-
Fruit Protection: Protect the ripening fruit from pests and disease by covering it with netting or other barriers if necessary.
-
Plant Rotation: Establish new strawberry plantings every three to four years, as their yield and productivity naturally decline over time.
